In 2019, the Áspero took the gravel world by storm and ushered in a “new era of speed on gravel.” The new Áspero stays true to its original concept but has a few improvements: a threaded bottom bracket shell, cleaner cable routing and a UDH-compatible derailleur hanger for those who want to use SRAM’s Transmission drivetrains. And of course it’s more aerodynamic. With the Áspero, aerodynamic performance is less about pure speed by reducing drag and more about saving energy. After a hard day in a headwind, the three watts saved compared to the previous Aspero could add up to one less energy gel for your stomach to digest.

In addition to reducing drag, the seat stays were lowered for a bit more compliance at the rear, and the front wheel stiffness was slightly reduced to make the final hours of a long race less painful. A little more tire clearance was also created between the lowered seat stays for muddy conditions, incorporating lessons learned from the R5-CX (and the 2023 Unbound mud bath). These are many seemingly small improvements, but they add up to a significant amount. The result is a bike that feels like the original Áspero, but is faster, more comfortable, and more versatile.
